Don Mueang Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 — walkway, shuttle, connection timing

Don Mueang (DMK) split international flights into Terminal 1 and domestic flights into Terminal 2 in 2019. The two terminals sit roughly 450 metres apart, connected by a Level-2 enclosed walkway and a free 24/7 shuttle bus. For a self-transfer, the practical question is how much time to leave between flights — here's the honest answer.

01What's at T1 vs T2

**Terminal 1 (T1)** handles international arrivals and departures — including most LCC international routes (AirAsia X international, Thai Lion Air international, FlyArystan, NokScoot legacy, and a rotating set of regional carriers). Customs and immigration sit on Level 2.

**Terminal 2 (T2)** handles domestic flights — Thai AirAsia (the bulk of T2 traffic), Thai Lion Air domestic, Nok Air. Domestic departures and arrivals are on Level 3.

This split was finalised in 2019. Older travel articles sometimes refer to a different layout — check your airline's current confirmation before relying on memory of past trips.

02The 450m enclosed walkway (Level 2)

The fastest connection between T1 and T2 is the **air-conditioned walkway on Level 2** — about 450 metres end to end, fully enclosed, no need to step outside. Allow **5–8 minutes walking** with a carry-on bag, **10–12 minutes** if you're with kids, mobility constraints, or a check-in suitcase.

Look for the signs labelled "Terminal 1" / "Terminal 2" on Level 2 once you've cleared the relevant area. The walkway is open 24/7. There are travelators on parts of the route.

03The free 24/7 shuttle bus

If walking isn't an option (large luggage, mobility constraint, very late arrival), the **free shuttle bus** runs every **5–10 minutes during daytime** and every **15–20 minutes overnight**. It loops between T1 (Door 6 international arrivals curb / Door 14 domestic curb) and T2.

The shuttle is operated by the airport, not by airlines or third parties — no booking, no payment, just step on. Total ride time is 3–5 minutes including the boarding queue. Late at night the shuttle is the slower option but easier with bags.

04Self-transfer timing — how much to budget

If you're doing a **same-day self-transfer** between T1 (international) and T2 (domestic), or vice versa, build the connection on these realistic numbers:

- **International arrival → domestic departure**: 90 minutes minimum. That covers ~30 min immigration + bag claim, ~10 min walkway, ~50 min check-in + security at T2. - **Domestic arrival → international departure**: 2 hours minimum. T1 international check-in opens 3 hours before flight and the queue moves slower than domestic. - **Tight connections** under 90 minutes are technically possible but you'll be sweating the queue. Not recommended unless your domestic flight is on the same airline as your inbound international (some airlines through-check bags).

If the connection is the same carrier (e.g., AirAsia → AirAsia, Thai Lion → Thai Lion), they sometimes coordinate bag transfer. Most LCC self-transfers do not — you collect bags at arrival and re-check at departure.

05When a chauffeur makes more sense than the shuttle

If you're connecting between **DMK and Suvarnabhumi (BKK)** — not within DMK — that's a different problem. The two airports are ~47 km apart with no inter-airport shuttle. Read the DMK to BKK transfer guide for the timing and route.

If you've landed at DMK with a hotel-bound onward trip in Bangkok, the chauffeur is parked curbside at your terminal — Don Mueang arrival pickup guide has the exact meeting points by terminal and exit door. Flat ฿3,000 to anywhere in Bangkok, 24/7.

06FAQ

How long does it take to walk from Don Mueang Terminal 1 to Terminal 2?
About 5–8 minutes with carry-on luggage via the enclosed Level-2 walkway (450 metres). Add 2–5 minutes if you have a check-in suitcase, are travelling with kids, or have a mobility constraint. The walkway is open 24/7 with travelators on parts of the route.
Is the shuttle bus between DMK Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 free?
Yes — completely free, no booking, no payment. The airport operates it 24/7. Daytime frequency is every 5–10 minutes; overnight drops to every 15–20 minutes. Pickup points are T1 Door 6 / Door 14 and the T2 curb.
How much time should I leave between flights at DMK for a self-transfer?
Build 90 minutes minimum if you're connecting international (T1) → domestic (T2) — that covers immigration, bag claim, the walkway, and re-check-in at T2. Go to 2 hours minimum if connecting domestic → international, because T1 international check-in queues move slower. Tight connections under 90 min are technically possible but stressful unless your carrier through-checks bags.
