Bangkok to Ayutthaya — private day trip, from THB 5,000
80 km north of Bangkok lies the former capital — UNESCO ruins, the elephant village, riverside Wat Chai Watthanaram. The Half Day package (5 hours, THB 5,000) gets you there, lets you wander, and brings you back — without the tour-bus crowd.
01How long the drive takes
Bangkok to Ayutthaya is approximately 80 km via the AH1 / Bang Pa-In Expressway. Off-peak: 1 to 1.5 hours each way. The drive itself is the easiest day trip out of Bangkok — no mountains, mostly motorway, predictable traffic outside of rush hour.
02What package fits
Half Day (5 hours, THB 5,000) is the standard recommendation — covers the round trip plus 2–3 hours of wandering between 3–4 temple sites. Full Day (10 hours, THB 7,500) makes sense if you want to add Bang Pa-In Summer Palace, the floating market at Klong Sa Bua, or the elephant village.
03What to see
Wat Mahathat (Buddha head in tree roots), Wat Phra Si Sanphet (the three chedis), Wat Chai Watthanaram (riverside, golden hour photo spot), Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon (giant reclining Buddha). Most are within a 10-minute drive of each other inside the historical park.
04FAQ
- Do you arrange entry tickets?
- No, but the Ayutthaya combo ticket (THB 220 covers 6 sites) is sold at any of the major temples — your chauffeur will point you to the kiosk. Some sites are free; the entire historical park can also be visited as outdoor ruins for no fee.
- Best time of year to go?
- November–February is dry-cool season, the most pleasant for walking. April–May is intensely hot. July–October is rainy but the temples are gorgeous after a shower clears.
- Can we stop in Bang Pa-In on the way back?
- Yes — book Full Day (10 hours) so the timing works. Bang Pa-In Summer Palace adds about 2 hours including driving and a leisurely walk.
