03Three ways to spend the day: beach, island, culture

Six hours on the ground is enough for one of these three plans done properly — not all three in a day. Pick the shape first, then let the chauffeur route it.

Beach day. Sun, a slow seafood lunch, and one landmark. Start at Jomtien or Wong Amat, eat by the water, then add the Sanctuary of Truth — the all-teak carved hall on the shoreline — or head up to Big Buddha Hill (Wat Phra Yai) and the Pattaya Viewpoint for the bay from above.

Four names get used interchangeably, and they are not the same beach.

• Pattaya Beach — the city beach and promenade, walkable to hotels, restaurants, and the nightlife; busy and central, not the place for a quiet swim
• Jomtien — just south of the city, wider and calmer, the easiest choice with kids
• Wong Amat — the north end, quieter, backed by the higher-end hotels
• Koh Larn — the island a short boat ride offshore, with the clearest swimming water of the four

If the point of the day is the water, plan around Koh Larn. If it's a promenade stroll and a long lunch, the mainland beaches are the simpler day — both are an easy hop for the chauffeur, while Koh Larn means the Bali Hai Pier crossing from the island plan above.

05Leave Bangkok by 08:00

The clock at the Bang Na merge decides your whole morning.

• Saturday — a wider off-peak window than Friday and an easy return; the default choice for most day-trippers
